Having played all of his minor hockey in Saint-Hubert on the south shore of Montreal, Joël then played for 3 seasons with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the QMJHL where he won several individual honors including the scoring championship (Jean Béliveau Trophy), most valuable player to his team (Michel Brière Trophy) and selection on the 1st all-star team of the Canadian Hockey League. All during the 2002-2003 season.
Drafted by the Anaheim Ducks, formerly known as the Mighty Ducks, in 2001, he played nearly 100 games in the National Hockey League with the Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues, and Vancouver Canucks. His career later took him to Europe, where he spent several years, including in Finland and Switzerland.
Since his retirement, he wants to share his knowledge and experiences acquired during his career.
He currently holds the position of head coach for the Rimouski Oceanic in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).
